Your 6 reasons to choose LED lights

08/05/2014

1. Long Life

Imagine that after changing a LED bulb you will not need to use time and resources to change it again in many years to come. Sounds good, right? Long life time stands out as the number one benefit of LED lights. LED bulbs and diodes have an outstanding operational life time expectation of up to 100.000 hours (8-10 times longer than standard halogen lamps). This is 11 years of continuous operation, or 22 years of 50% operation. If you leave a LED light on for 8h a day it would take around 20 years before you’d have to replace the LED bulb.

LED’s are different to standard lighting: They don’t really burn out and stop working like a standard light, moreover the lighting diodes emit lower output levels over a very long period of time.

2. Energy Efficiency

LED lights are today’s most efficient way of illumination, with an estimated energy efficiency of 80%-90%. This means that about 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light, while only ca. 20% is lost in the form of heat.

While you still might think that 20% is a lot, remember that a standard 50W halogen bulb turns around 90% of the electricity used into heat with only 10% into light. Furthermore, LED lights use only about 15% of the energy a standard halogen bulb uses, while providing up to 85% of the light output and creating much less heat emissions which makes them so cool to touch. Some LED Lights can be operated by mains power, but when used with a Low Voltage LED Driver, LED Lights will produce more light output per watt.

Because the long life span of LED lights and the low maintenance - think of all the work and energy it would take to purchase, stock and change the conventional light bulbs of an airport - you’ll see that you can make significant savings when it comes to power use, maintenance and replacement.

 3. Environment Friendly

LED lights are free of toxic chemicals. Most conventional fluorescent lighting bulbs contain a multitude of materials like mercury that are dangerous for the environment and for human health.

The benefit of LED lights is that they are an eco-friendly form of lighting as they do not contain mercury or other harmful gasses and are 100% recyclable. For example, a 13w LED light emits 68% less CO2 than a standard 40w incandescent bulb running 10 hours a day. They do not emit any harmful UV rays either.

This will help you reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third. The long operational life span mentioned above means also that one LED light bulb can save the material and the production of 25 incandescent light bulbs. A big step towards a greener future!

4. Zero UV Emissions

LED lights produce only a very mall amount of infrared light and almost none UV.

Because of this LED lighting is highly suitable not only for  use around goods and materials sensitive to heat due to the low heat emissions, but also for illumination of UV-sensitive objects in for example museums, art galleries, archeological sites, etc.

5. Design Flexibility and Positive Psychological Effects

LED is a very flexible solution allowing for different light source combinations, shapes, etc. Individual LEDs can be dimmed resulting in a dynamic control of light, color and distribution. Well designed LED illumination systems can provide fantastic results, affecting not only the way we perceive objects but also our mood and emotions.

LED lights designed to positively affect the mood are already being used in airplanes, classrooms and various other locations. Given the results achieved, we can expect to see a growth in the use of LED lights in everyday settings in the years to come.

6. Low-Voltage

A low-voltage power supply is sufficient for LED illumination. Therefore it is very easy to use LED lights in for example outdoor settings. This flexibility of LEDs is a big advantage when it comes to using technology in remote or rural areas.
